Visual Identity System

Typography

Consistent use of typography is the foundation of the Iowa State visual identity. Our graphic communications reach many overlapping audiences and it is important that the university's image is reflected clearly and consistently in all situations. Careful use of typography establishes a unique graphic look that is instantly identified with Iowa State, creating a cohesive, professional image.

Two type families have been carefully selected for our graphic communications: ITC Berkeley Old Style and Univers. These two type families, highly versatile and highly legible, are compatible with each other as well as with our nameplate. ITC Berkeley is a traditional serif typeface. Univers is a sans serif typeface with a clean, modern look. Together, they reflect these two traits that embody Iowa State University. The wide range of weights available in both families provide several options necessary to create an effective typographic message.

The university has purchased site licenses for the most commonly used fonts within these type families. The font package, updated in 2008, is available for both PC and Mac platforms through TechCYTE at the University Book Store. Cost is $39.99. Contact TechCYTE at 294-8357.

Commercial printers and graphic designers not affiliated with the university may purchase the fonts from any Adobe type vendor. If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information.

For web and electronic presentation applications, specific type families have been selected that share similar characteristics with Berkeley and Univers. See the links on this page for additional typographic information for print, web and electronic presentations.
